The year is going to be a year of innovations when it comes to smartphones. Foldable phones have already made a splash in the global market with leading players like Samsung , Oppo bringing out their best offerings.

The latest to join the bandwagon is Motorola. According to recent reports, Motorola is gearing up to launch the third generation of its iconic Razr foldable phone.

Motorola Razr was among the first wave of foldable phones to be launched in A post on Weibo by Chen Jin, GM of Lenovo - the parent company of Motorola, hinted that the smartphone maker is silently working on its third-generation foldable phones. There are only two cameras on the phone - one on the outside of the flip part and another on the inside, tucked inside a notch yes, really. It is coupled with dual-LED flash. The biggest talking point of this device is the foldable panel. It is pOLED with a ratio and has the marketing name Cinemavision and a resolution of x pixels. There is another Quick View screen on the outside of the device with a 2.

The display and battery life improved over time in newer models, and expandable storage support was added. Its software was not good either - simple tasks like emailing and file management were painful on the phone.

It was not the only clamshell smartphone of its time but it was the best clamshell smartphone of its time. Despite its shortcomings in features, it sold 50 million units in just 2 years, and million units over its lifetime. The new Razr is the closest thing to the original Razr. It dares to do something very different than the rest of the market.

Companies like Samsung and Huawei are experimenting with foldable form factors in their own ways but the Razr looks nothing like an experiment. In folded form, it measures 72 x 94 x 14mm, or 72 x x 6. It has a non-removable mAh battery, and the unit as a whole is described as splashproof. Like the Model T, it comes in just black. There doesn't appear to be a slot for extra storage.

The new handset carries many of the same build qualities that made the Razr so popular: a small, pocket-sized body, and a quirky design that made it recognizable and popular. Motorola has taken a big gamble on the flexible display front, though, we reckon. Back in April, Samsung excitedly showed off its new Galaxy Fold phones to journalists, and then climbed into a small hole when, after just a few days of use, the screens started cracking for various reasons.

The manufacturer had to delay its entire launch schedule as a result, and claimed to have resolved everything in July with a new launch date. Come September, it did appear to have addressed reviewers' concerns, with one Samsungite assuring El Reg that the biz had tested the new design by performing ", times folding and unfolding".

The benefit to a folding screen in a normal sized phone should be immediately obvious: a massive screen. Wide and tall and lovely. As long as it works. And while Motorola held a massive party on the US West Coast to convince the press that its approach works, only time will tell. If the folding screen holds up and that's a big if , this looks like a tasty bit of kit — but you may not be able to get your hands on it, or not immediately.
